Cape Minstrel Carnival
In the Cape Minstrel Carnival, the group themselves become the players. The scene is set with a “flea market scenario”. The stalls are filled with colorful clothing items, materials, hats and music instruments. Hats are decorated with the art materials. We provide other miscellaneous items to fully authenticate the scene.
The main group is divided into smaller groups or bands. Each group has their “pay day” and is given their “wages”. Then off they go to the flea market to make their purchases.
Each team has to come away with sufficient merchandise to be able to clothe and accessorize their team. In addition, teams must personalize and decorate their hats, get face paint make-up to fit the part and most importantly, enough music instruments. With all this intact, their group creates an award winning performance!
The groups complete the purchases, then set about creating costumes and completing make up in true minstrel style. Our music facilitators take each group and give them some tuition. They learn just how the “minstrels” turn on that amazing sound when marching through the streets of Cape Town. Finally, the show is on.
The Cape Minstrel Carnival march
Individual group performances precede the main march. Next, the groups walk along playing their instruments and creating a glorious spectacle in an activity that they will not easily forget.
In truth, it’s authentic, it is TRUE Western Cape, it’s dynamic and it’s fun. Certainly a real winner.
Optional add on:
Stage the ultimate performance in an X-factor show with judges, decor, music and all the fanfare. The judges decide the group that walks away with the honors of being the most authentic.
